Over a week had passed since joining the Wichita Mountains pack, and I was slowly getting used to it. Dorian had early morning patrols, so I spent the time with Trace and Casey. Casey was finally able to get out of bed and join the land of the living. Trace would eventually go back to his apartment, but he seemed hesitant to return. I couldn’t tell what it was, but something seemed off about him. I thought about asking him about it, but I had a feeling he wouldn’t say what was wrong.
The twins and I were lounging around in the living room while Trace was cradling his niece, happy to have some time to ourselves.
“So, can you only do ice magic, or other stuff?” Trace asked while patting Zoe’s back.
I said, “No, I can also do, what most spellcasters would classify as elementary magic like levitating, teleporting, mind tricks, etc.”
“Mind tricks?” Casey asked in confusion.
I nodded. “Yeah, like memory wiping, or mental illusions, things of that nature. But I don’t like using them unless it’s absolutely necessary.”
“Well, did you use it on your former packs, so they would forget you or something?”
“No,” I said flatly. “While I would’ve loved to have done that, I couldn’t. Magic isn’t infinite, and even I have my limits. To wipe the memory of all shifters in every pack I’d been with would require an extreme amount of concentration, magic, and time. All of which I didn’t have a lot of.”
“So, did you choose ice as your elemental magic, or how does that work?” Trace asked.
I hadn’t thought about that moment in my life for ages. Being born with magic in my blood was already a burden as it was, but that night made things far worse for me. As frigid as my heart became, it seemed fitting that my magic would be just as cold.
“No, I didn’t choose to have ice magic, it was forced on me,” I finally stated.
The twins looked at me inquisitively. “How so?” Casey asked.
I debated in my head whether I wanted to share my story with these two. I was never any good with talking about myself, since I never had anyone willing to listen, not until I met Dorian. The omegas seemed friendly enough, so what could it hurt. I took in a breath and thought back to the night everything went to hell.
“It happened when I was about twelve years old, a year before I was forced to leave my birth pack. I was bullied a lot for not being a full wolf, but I always tried to hold my head high. One night, I couldn’t handle it anymore, and ran off. There was a blizzard coming, so it wasn’t ideal to be running off on my own, but I wasn’t thinking of that. You can imagine what it was like for a young pup to be out in that type of weather. Even in my wolf form I was fucking freezing. I tried making it back, but I found myself lost.
